Description
The 1831 Christopher Bechtler Two and a Half Dollar Gold Piece with 75 grains and no beaded border represents a different design approach from the beaded-border quarter eagles. This variety prominently displays "75.G" on the obverse alongside a star, indicating the coin contains 75 grains of gold — significantly more than the 64-70 grain range used on later Bechtler quarter eagles. The absence of the beaded border gives the coin a cleaner, more open appearance. The 75-grain weight standard for quarter eagles was generous relative to the gold content of contemporary federal quarter eagles. Christopher Bechtler intentionally struck his coins with full or even slightly excess gold content to establish confidence in his private coinage. This strategy proved successful, as Bechtler coins circulated freely alongside federal issues throughout the southeastern United States and were widely accepted by merchants and banks. The star that accompanies the 75G inscription is a distinctive design element that helps identify this variety. The obverse displays "CAROLINA GOLD" with the weight mark and star, while the reverse shows the denomination and Bechtler's name. This variety, struck during the earliest period of the Bechtler mint's operation, documents the initial weight standards and design choices that Christopher Bechtler established for his quarter eagle denomination.
Rarity Notes
Scarce. Estimated 30-45 surviving examples. The 75-grain standard with star is distinctive to the early Bechtler production.
