Description
The 1944 (D) Jefferson Nickel - Wartime Silver Alloy represents a Denver Mint issue from the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 series. The Denver Mint struck 32,309,000 wartime silver-alloy nickels dated 1944. The obverse features Thomas Jefferson facing left and the reverse displays Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate. Wartime silver alloy continues. The 1944-D/S RPM variety (D over S mintmark) is a notable error. Denver's mint evolved from a frontier assay office into one of the nation's primary coin production facilities, opening in 1906. Estimated market value ranges from $5 to $41 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese, weighing 5 grams, 21.2 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #84023.
