Description
The 1944 (D) Jefferson Nickel - Wartime Silver Alloy represents a Denver Mint issue from the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 series. With a mintage of 32.3 million, this is a less common issue — ranked 2nd of 3 mint variants by mintage, with 19% of production. The obverse features Thomas Jefferson facing left and the reverse displays Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate. Wartime silver alloy continues. The 1944-D/S RPM variety (D over S mintmark) is a notable error. Denver's mint evolved from a frontier assay office into one of the nation's primary coin production facilities, opening in 1906.
