1944-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-016

Description

A D/D Tilted variety documented by VarietyVista, this Denver Mint wartime silver Jefferson Nickel uniquely records a mid-production obverse die change, tracked through two distinct UVC pairings. Die markers UVC-509 / DMR-018: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with reverse at MDS, a die crack from the head to rim at K-12:00 at MDS, and a die crack down the face behind the eye, nose, and mouth. Then UVC-565 / DMR-023: Stage C with a die crack from the lower right building to rim at LDS, another from the upper left building to rim, the obverse die changed at MDS, and a die crack west-west in the upper hair. The Stage B facial die crack tracing behind Jefferson's eye, nose, and mouth is diagnostically distinctive. Struck in 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm.
