Error
Description
A D/D South repunched mintmark distinguishes this 1944-D wartime Jefferson Nickel, documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-183 / DMR-011. Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with the reverse at MDS and a light die crack running east-west in the hair above the forehead on the obverse at MDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The east-west hair crack indicates a fracture perpendicular to the die's striking axis, a common failure pattern in areas of deep relief where Jefferson's hair detail concentrates forces. Composed of the wartime alloy of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese, weighing 5.0 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter. Struck at the Denver Mint in 1944 with the oversized D mintmark above Monticello's dome distinguishing Denver's silver-alloy production.
