1944-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

A D/D/D East, West triple-punched mintmark from the Denver Mint, this 1944-D wartime silver Jefferson Nickel was documented by VarietyVista with three distinct punch impressions showing opposing lateral displacements. Die markers UVC-179 / DMR-007 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS with a die crack from the right dome south between pillar #2 and #3 and a die crack from the rim to the mintmark through the second U of PLURIBUS, with obverse at MDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The two converging Stage B die cracks create a fracture pattern linking the dome, pillar region, and mintmark area. Struck in 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the oversized D above Monticello distinguished the wartime silver alloy from standard copper-nickel issues during WWII production.
