1944-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-003

Description

Unusual for carrying dual die marker references, DDO-003 on the 1944-D wartime Jefferson Nickel exhibits light spread on LIBERTY, the five-pointed star, and the date, documented under two separate tracking entries: UVC-774/DMR-024 and UVC-775/DMR-025. This double cataloging is atypical — most varieties carry a single UVC/DMR pair — and may indicate either two recognized die states of the same working die (where progressive die wear or damage created distinguishable conditions before and after a change point) or a cross-listing between two VarietyVista tracking entries that were later determined to originate from the same physical die. In either interpretation, the dual references provide collectors with twice the diagnostic framework for attribution, as characteristics from both UVC-774 and UVC-775 may be observable on a single specimen depending on the die state at the time of striking. The 1944-D was struck at the Denver Mint in the wartime silver alloy (35% silver, 56% copper, 9% manganese), bearing the large D above Monticello's dome. Light spread on the three obverse elements follows the familiar pattern of Felix Schlag's design, with the star's angular geometry and the date numerals offering the most precise diagnostic surfaces for confirming the subtle hub displacement.
