1944-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-014

Description

The 1944-D Jefferson nickel WRPM-014 shows D/D/D South and Tilted (Rotated) repunching — three impressions of the D mintmark with the second and third displaced southward and one impression carrying a slight rotation relative to the primary. Wexler Variety ID: 1944-D 5¢ WRPM-014; no other known cross-references. Obverse die markers: a north-south die crack at the back of the head; three short die scratches extending southwest from the tip of the nose. The reverse shows extremely minor Class II doubling on the last A in AMERICA, a die crack running from the right base to the rim, and a weaker die crack from the rim at an additional position. The 1944-D Jefferson nickel was struck in standard cupro-nickel composition — the wartime silver alloy was used only on nickels carrying the large mintmark above Monticello from mid-1942 through 1945. Triple repunching with a tilted orientation is exceptionally unusual, and WRPM-014's southward displacement pattern creates a vertically elongated mintmark cluster visible under moderate magnification. Two die gouges inside the upper opening of the U in UNITED. Die gouge touches the top of the E in STATES. Die gouge inside the C in CENTS.
