1944 (D) Jefferson Nickel - Wartime Silver Alloy - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-014

Description

1944-D WRPM-014 is a repunched mint mark on the 1944-D wartime silver-alloy Jefferson nickel, cataloged by the Wexler team. The D shows three punches, one extra impression to the south and one tilted (rotated) (D/D/D South and Tilted (Rotated)). On the obverse, a north-south die crack lies at the back of the head, and three short scratches leave the tip of the nose heading SW. On the reverse, the last A in AMERICA shows extremely minor Class II doubling. A die crack runs from the right base to the rim; a weak crack leaves the rim, crosses the last U in PLURIBUS at its upper left serif and heads toward the mint mark; the U in UNITED has two gouges in its upper opening; a gouge touches the E in STATES at its top; and another gouge lies inside the C in CENTS. Louis A. West submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references.
