1944-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
Bearing the primary doubled die reverse designation for its date-mint combination, the 1944-D Jefferson Nickel DDR-001 displays medium hub doubling spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and OF AMERICA, with the spread increasing from left to right across these inscriptions on Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse. The progressive increase in spread intensity indicates a rotational or pivoted hub displacement, where elements farther from the pivot axis exhibit proportionally greater separation. This variety was struck in the wartime silver alloy composition — 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese — adopted from 1942 to 1945 to conserve nickel for military applications, identified by the large mintmark placed above Monticello's dome. Two die marker pairs are documented: UVC-174 with DMR-002 and UVC-175 with DMR-003, suggesting two tracked die stages or potentially documenting both dies in the marriage. Notably, the reverse die is also listed as RPM-001 — a repunched mintmark variety — making this a combination DDR and RPM variety where both hub doubling and a repunched D mintmark appear on the same reverse die. Struck at the Denver Mint at 5.0 grams on a 21.2mm planchet. Examine E PLURIBUS UNUM and OF AMERICA for medium secondary contours increasing rightward, and check the large D mintmark above Monticello for repunching.
