Privately issued tokens produced by merchants as advertising pieces and local currency substitutes, primarily during periods when official small change was scarce. These tokens typically bear the merchant's name, location, and trade on one side. Spanning from the early 1800s through the early 1900s, they document American commercial history at the local level across hundreds of cities and towns.
