Merchant Store Cards

About This Series

Privately issued by individual merchants as combined advertising and currency substitutes, store cards document American commercial life at the grassroots level across hundreds of towns from the early 1800s through early 1900s. These tokens bear the merchant's name, business type, and location on one side with a denomination or slogan on the other, struck in copper, brass, or white metal at 19-29 mm. They proliferated most during periods of scarce small change — the Hard Times era of the late 1830s and Civil War years of 1861-1864 produced the greatest volumes. The Rulau catalog organizes by state and locality, while Civil War store cards use the Fuld reference system. Every token tells a micro-historical story: a specific dry goods store, saloon, or hardware merchant in a documented town and period, making them invaluable sources for local historians and genealogists. Survival rates vary enormously — urban tokens survive commonly while rural pieces may exist in single-digit populations, creating a field where rarities are continuously rediscovered.
