Description
Malcolm & Gaul were New York City merchants whose token (Miller NY-515) dates to 1850. Their token is part of the extensive mid-century New York merchant token series that documents the city's commercial landscape during a period of unprecedented growth and immigration. New York's population doubled between 1840 and 1860, driven by waves of Irish and German immigrants, creating enormous demand for retail goods and services that firms like Malcolm & Gaul sought to capture through token advertising. Copper was the workhorse metal of the American token industry, and this piece exemplifies the standard merchant store card format. The copper planchet accepted fine engraving detail and resisted corrosion, helping tokens survive decades of pocket carry. Cataloged as Miller NY-515 in the standard reference for American merchant tokens. Surviving specimens in higher grades are scarce, as most tokens saw extensive commercial use before being saved.
