Coin Details
Description
N.C. Folger was a New Orleans merchant who issued multiple token varieties (Miller LA-10 through LA-15) in copper, brass, and gilt brass over a period of several years. New Orleans was the largest city in the antebellum South and a major port handling cotton, sugar, and goods from the Mississippi River trade. Folger's sustained token production indicates an established business with a commitment to token advertising. The gilt finish over the base metal provided an eye-catching golden surface that would have attracted immediate attention. Gilt tokens were more expensive to produce and are scarcer than unfinished brass or copper versions. With 4 known token varieties, N.C. Folger was an active issuer of merchant tokens. Cataloged as Miller La-11B. American merchant tokens represent an important chapter in the economic history of the United States, documenting the businesses, products, and commercial practices of the 19th century. Collector interest in merchant store cards has grown as the tokens are increasingly recognized as primary historical documents of 19th century commerce.
Rarity Notes
Gilt pieces are somewhat scarcer than plain brass or copper versions, as the gilding process added cost to production. N.C. Folger issued 4 known token varieties.
