Description

Browning Brothers were wholesale druggists at 33 Market Street in Philadelphia, founded by Maurice Browning around 1839. The firm also operated "Aroma Mills," a manufacturing facility in Camden, New Jersey, where they produced pharmaceutical preparations and drug compounds for wholesale distribution. Their brass token (Miller Pa-59) advertised the drug wholesaling business. Browning Brothers served as middlemen between drug manufacturers and retail pharmacists, a critical role in the pharmaceutical supply chain of mid-nineteenth-century America. Struck in brass, this token presented a distinctive golden color that set it apart from the standard copper cent. Merchants who chose brass planchets benefited from the eye-catching appearance while keeping production costs low. Cataloged as Miller Pa-59. This token type is part of a broader tradition of private American coinage stretching from colonial times through the Civil War era. Collector interest in merchant store cards has grown as the tokens are increasingly recognized as primary historical documents of 19th century commerce.

Rarity Notes
