As with the other 2007 First Spouse coins, the mintage shown is the Red Book's reference figure rather than a Mint net mintage, since the Mint reported gross first-day sales only. The obverse features Robert Scot's Draped Bust Liberty from the half cent of 1800-1808, a design in use during Thomas Jefferson's presidency, chosen because he served without a spouse, and the reverse displays a scene tied to his life. Thomas Jefferson's wife Martha died in 1782, nineteen years before his presidency; the obverse uses a Draped Bust Liberty from his era. The reverse depicts Jefferson's grave obelisk at Monticello.
