Classic Head Quarter Eagles 1834-1839

Coin Series
Classic Head Quarter Eagles 1834-1839

About This Series

William Kneass designed this quarter eagle after the weight reduction of 1834, which removed the incentive to melt gold coins. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM was omitted to distinguish the new lighter coins from old-weight pieces. Charlotte and Dahlonega mint issues from 1838-1839 are the first branch mint gold coins and are scarce.
