Description

The 1834 Capped Head to Left Quarter Eagle was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a Gold Quarter Eagle in the Capped Head to Left Quarter Eagles 1821-1834 series. The Philadelphia Mint struck 4,000 quarter eagles dated 1834 to the old standard; CoinWeek reports that most stayed at the Mint and were melted after the lighter standard took effect on August 1, 1834. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a cap with curls of hair beneath and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Final year of the Capped Head type, replaced by the Classic Head design after the gold content reduction. Struck in 91.7% gold, 8.3% silver and copper, weighing 4.37 grams, 18.2 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7674.
