Description
The 1839 (O) Classic Head Quarter Eagle is a Gold Quarter Eagle produced at the New Orleans Mint as part of the Classic Head Quarter Eagles 1834-1839 series. With a mintage of 17,781, this is a scarce issue — ranked 2nd of 4 mint variants by mintage, with 23% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a fillet or headband inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM without the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. Final year of the Classic Head type. The 1839-C and 1839-D are collected as early Southern branch mint gold issues. Struck at the New Orleans Mint, which operated from 1838 to 1909 and produced coins prized for their historical Southern provenance. Estimated market value ranges from $1.7K to $40K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18.2 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
