Description
The 1836 Classic Head Quarter Eagle - Block 8 is a Gold Quarter Eagle produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Classic Head Quarter Eagles 1834-1839 series. The U.S. Mint produced 547,986 examples, making this ranked 2nd of 3 mint variants by mintage, with 50% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a fillet or headband inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM without the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. Script 8 and Block 8 varieties exist. Mintage remained robust at Philadelphia. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $893 to $8.9K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18.2 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
