Catalogued by Trail Dies, 2014P-50DER-003T is a trail die reverse variety on the 2014 (P) Kennedy Half Dollar, discovered by Phil Hammond. The obverse is in Stage C — a late die state — showing a die chip connecting to a die crack that runs the length of Kennedy's cheek. Trail dies occur when a die intended for one denomination or design is used to strike a different issue, leaving a faint secondary impression of the unintended design element on the struck coin. The Kennedy Half Dollar, introduced in 1964 following President Kennedy's assassination, reached its fiftieth anniversary in 2014; the U.S. Mint issued special gold and enhanced-finish commemoratives that year alongside the standard clad business strikes. Phil Hammond's discovery of 003T adds to the documented census of trail die reverses for the Kennedy series.
