Description

Documented in the Trail Dies catalog and discovered by Bob Piazza of Florida, the 1999P-1DER-056T is a trail die reverse variety found on the 1999 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent. Die marker documentation identifies Stage B at mid-die-state (MDS): the obverse shows die clash remnants under the ear, confirming a prior clash event left transferred design elements on the obverse die face. The reverse in MDS presents multiple notable features: a DDR (doubled die reverse) manifesting as doubled knees on the seated Lincoln statue, a die chip on the right cornice of the Memorial building, and a die clash line in the 3rd bay (the space between Memorial columns). The coexistence of a trail die impression with a doubled die reverse on the same working die creates a dual-variety specimen, as the DDR originated during die manufacture (hub misalignment) while the trail die impression arose during die setup or installation, representing two independent anomaly types from different stages of the die's lifecycle. The die clash line in the 3rd bay provides additional evidence of the die's eventful service history, documenting yet another production incident.
