2014 (P) Kennedy Half Dollar - P-50DEO-001T Trail Die Obverse

Description

2014P-50DEO-001T is a Kennedy half dollar obverse from Philadelphia in 2014. In TrailDies' code, 2014P is the date and mint, 50 the half dollar, DEO a design extension on the obverse, 001 the file and T trails. Lines come off the P mint mark and the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST, heading east-southeast at 120°, down and to the right. TrailDies pairs this obverse with a reverse that also has trails, 2014P-50DER-001T. On the middle-die-state coin it describes, a crack is starting in Kennedy's lower neck and running into the field, and on the reverse a long, nearly vertical scratch lies to the right of the eagle's left wing. Phil Hammond found the die. The usual view is that trails come from polishing the die with a rotary tool; others hold that the die moved against the hub.
