Description

This 2008-P Presidential Dollar featuring James Monroe carries the trail die obverse attribution 2008P(JM)-100DEO-003T in the Trail Dies catalog, Position A. Trail die varieties occur when a working die continues past its intended retirement, producing coins with characteristic softness or ghosting from over-worn die geometry. The Presidential Dollar series, begun in 2007 to honor deceased former presidents in service order, produced four coins per year and attracted variety research interest because of the complex edge-lettered inscription format added to these dollars. Stage B die markers are documented for both faces. On the obverse at mid-die state, two markers are present: a die gouge in the coat above the D of PRESIDENT and a die gouge to the right of the J in JAMES — both in the field surrounding the Monroe portrait. On the reverse at mid-die state, no significant additional markers are noted. The Position A designation refers to the orientation relationship between the edge lettering and the coin faces, a recognized collecting variable for Presidential Dollars where edge letter position is tracked alongside standard obverse and reverse diagnostics.

Die Markers

  • Stage “B”, obverse is MDS- die gouge, in coat, above the D in PRESIDENT. Die gouge to the right of the J in JAMES
  • Reverse is MDS – none noted.
