Description
TrailDies' 2000P-5DER-002T is known from a very late die state (stage D) of a 2000 Philadelphia nickel reverse. The code reads 2000P, then 5 for the five-cent coin, DER, meaning the design extension is on the reverse, file 002 and T. Lines leave the lower right corners of the LLO in MONTICELLO and of the N in CENTS, pointing to 140°, southeast. Because the die was so worn, TrailDies suggests earlier strikes could carry more trails. Both sides of the coin described show heavy die-deterioration flow lines, centered near the date on the obverse and above the E of the reverse motto. As with other trail dies, rotary polishing of the die is the main suspected cause, with the die moving against the hub as the minority explanation.
