2000 (P) Jefferson Nickel - Atypical Die Clash ADC-5C-2000-02

Description

ADC-5c-2000-02 is an atypical die clash on a 2000-P Jefferson nickel, cataloged by Mad Die Clashes. Nearly every design element was carried over to the opposite die; only the center of the obverse is free of clash marks, and both dies survived intact. The dies were correctly aligned for striking, but the clash was offset 5° from the horizontal plane, and it is not known which die moved. The clash reached even the lettering at the rim: IN GOD shows clearly, with WE TRUST behind E PLURIBUS; the date and part of LIBERTY sit on the right side of Monticello; and the gap between Jefferson's neck and queue forms a long, thin "smoke" line rising off the roof's left side. The end of PLURIBUS lies below Jefferson's bust, mingling with IN GOD, and part of UNUM sits behind the designer's initials. David Dukette found the coin in pocket change, and PCGS has graded it AU-58.
