2000 (P) Jefferson Nickel - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Recognized as the premier doubled die obverse for the 2000 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel, WDDO-001 was attributed by Billy G. Crawford and cross-referenced as CDDO-001 in the Crawford catalog. Class II distorted hub doubling produces a consistent directional spread when the hub tilts slightly during die manufacture, and this example delivers a very nice spread visible on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, and the date. Doubling also extends to the front of Jefferson's collar, providing an additional diagnostic point for authentication. Class II varieties are among the most visually appealing doubled dies because the uniform directional shift creates a clear shadow effect rather than the notch-like separation seen in other classes. Felix Schlag's enduring Jefferson portrait, first introduced in 1938, provides ample raised detail across the obverse legends and bust where hub doubling can manifest. Collectors should examine the lettering under at least 5x magnification, paying particular attention to the serifs of LIBERTY and the lower loops of the date numerals where the spread is most pronounced.
