Description

Cataloged as the first documented spiked head on the 2000-P Jefferson Nickel, SKH-5c-2000P-01 records a die gouge near Jefferson's portrait that transferred a raised metallic projection onto every coin struck from the affected die. A spiked head occurs when surface damage develops on the die near the portrait, creating a spike-like extension visible against the coin's field. The 2000-P date falls within the original Felix Schlag design era (1938-2003), before the Westward Journey series introduced new designs in 2004. Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickels of this period were struck in the standard 75% copper and 25% nickel composition on high-speed presses that consumed working dies rapidly, and surface damage near the portrait's highest-relief areas was a natural consequence of sustained striking pressure. Each spiked head variety is unique to its working die, with the angle, length, and position of the projection serving as primary diagnostics for attribution. Cataloged and verified by Cuds on Coins.
