1910 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001 / RPM-001

Description

RPM-001, which Wexler numbers WRPM-001, is a repunched mintmark on the 1910-S Lincoln wheat cent, an S/S South with a secondary S south of the primary. Both catalogs give it the Cherrypickers number FS-501, which Wexler writes FS-01-1910S-501. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties tracks four stages on each side. Obverse stage A has two overlapping inverted-V die scratches, together shaped like an M, to the left of the 9's lower tail. Stage B adds a short die scratch running east off the crossbar of the second T in TRUST, from its right side; in stage C the stage A markers are weaker, and in stage D they have worn away. Reverse stage A has a series of east-west die scratches inside the second U of UNUM. In stage B a very light die crack begins at the rim at 8 o'clock; in stage C it is heavily chipped and runs NE from there and reaches halfway through the left wheat grains; in stage D it is stronger on its south side. Kevin Flynn submitted stage A and Lloyd Hanson stages B, C and D. Wexler also lists Breen #2061, CONECA RPM #1 and Coppercoins 1910S-1MM-001. VarietyVista, which does not name a reporter, also records S/S South and FS-501. Under marker codes UVC-002 and DMR-004, stage A shows M-shaped die scratches inside the tail of the 9 in an early die state, with light die cracks from the NU of UNUM and from the BU of PLURIBUS to the rim, the reverse in a middle state. Under UVC-004 and DMR-003, stage B has the obverse early-middle and a changed reverse die in an early state. In stage C the obverse is middle and a die crack runs from the lower left wheat to the rim, early-middle; in stage D the scratches inside the 9 have worn away, late-middle, and the wheat crack is stronger, middle. Stage E, a late die state, is unconfirmed.
