1934 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-003 / RPM-003

Description

WRPM-003 is a repunched mint mark on the 1934-D Lincoln wheat cent, cataloged by Wexler and by VarietyVista as RPM-003. Both list it as Cherrypickers FS-503 (Wexler writes FS-01-1934D-503 (013.81)), and both describe four D punches (D/D/D/D South, South, North). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties follows four stages. Obverse stage A, submitted by Lloyd Hanson, has X-shaped scratches right of the mintmark, two gently curved scratches through the 3 of the date, V-shaped scratches running south from the base of that 3, fan-shaped scratches between the T and Y of LIBERTY, and a run of WNW/ESE scratches above WE; its secondary mintmark is very strong, with three clear repunchings, lying north, south and wide south. By stage B, from John Wexler, everything but faint scratches above WE has been abraded off, and all that is left of the doubling is the south repunching plus a faint northern secondary inside the lower part of the main D. Stage C, from Doug Yost, adds a die chip (dot) in the field east of the upper N of IN, with only the south secondary left. In stage D, again from Hanson, that chip is weaker and NNW/SSE scratches surround it, and the mintmark doubling has been reduced to heavy abrasion. On the reverse, stage A shows an NNE scratch from the lower inside of the C in CENT and a gouge (dot) a little above the left wheat stem, lying due south of the space separating the F and A of OF AMERICA; stage B keeps those; stage C adds a gouge (dot) in the field below the U in UNITED, toward its right side; and in stage D the two gouges are faint and all else is gone. CONECA lists it as RPM #3 and Coppercoins as 1934D-1MM-003. VarietyVista, without naming a reporter, tracks it under UVC-041 and DMR-006 for stages A to C. Stage A has strong secondary mintmarks north and far south in an early die state, with a die scratch running northeast inside the C of CENT and a gouge dot above the left stem. Stage B has a medium secondary mintmark, both sides in a middle die state. Stage C has a weak one in a late die state and a crack from the lower right wheat to the rim. Stage D, under UVC-042 and DMR-007, has a very weak secondary mintmark in a very late die state and a changed reverse die in a middle state.
