Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this wartime Denver Mint Washington Silver Quarter displays progressive die cracking at late die state across multiple portrait and reverse areas. Die markers UVC-0347 / DMR-023: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with reverse and obverse at MDS; Stage C with a die crack down the eagle's right wing, a die crack across upper hair, and a die crack across the base of bust at LDS. Three distinct die cracks converging at Stage C document severe structural fatigue spanning both die faces. Designed by John Flanagan, struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 6.25 grams and 24.3 mm, the 1943-D was produced during wartime when silver quarter production continued at robust levels. The concentration of cracking in the hair, bust base, and eagle wing areas reveals the typical failure pattern for Washington Quarter dies under heavy production stress.
