1943-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001
Error
Description
The primary doubled die obverse for the 1943-D Washington quarter, cataloged as DDO-001 by VarietyVista, this variety exhibits strong spread on LIBERTY, medium spread on the date, designer's initials, and ribbon end, and light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST. This graduated doubling across multiple design elements makes it one of the more prominent doubled die obverse varieties in the wartime Washington quarter series. Struck at the Denver Mint in 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams with a 24.3 mm diameter, this coin was produced during World War II when silver was still maintained in the quarter composition even as other denominations saw wartime alloy changes. Tracked under Universal Variety Code UVC-0326 and Die Marker Reference DMR-002, the die progresses through three documented states: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed); Stage B where both obverse and reverse are at mid die state; and Stage C at late die state showing a die crack across the bust into the field in front and the queue behind, a light die crack across the upper hair, and a light die crack on the wing under UNITED on the reverse. The reverse die is separately listed as RPM-008, indicating this die pair also carries a repunched mintmark variety. The combination of DDO-001 and RPM-008 on the same coin enhances its desirability among variety specialists. This belongs to the Washington Silver Quarters 1932-1964 series, and the Denver Mint produced over 16.0 million quarters in 1943.
