1943-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this 1943-D Washington Silver Quarter from the Denver Mint shows extensive die cracking at the late die stage across both faces. Die markers UVC-0341 / DMR-017 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C at LDS with a die crack down the eagle's right wing, a die crack from BUS of PLURIBUS to the wing, a die crack across the upper hair into the field under T of LIBERTY, and a light die crack across the bust. The four concurrent Stage C die cracks spanning both reverse eagle and obverse portrait areas document severe structural failure at end of die life. Designed by John Flanagan, struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 6.25 grams and 24.3 mm, the 1943-D was produced during WWII when silver quarter mintages remained substantial to support wartime commerce and military payroll needs.
