The obverse (I1 4) documents a cluster of features: the ear has been polished — likely by Mint workers attempting to smooth imperfections in the die surface — while the date shows doubling and the left stars display tripling, both originating from successive hub impressions that did not align precisely during die manufacture. Feed finger gouges refer to marks left by the mechanical fingers that feed planchets into the striking chamber; when these metal guides contact the die face, they leave distinctive linear impressions.
