Description

1878 WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1878 8 Tail Feathers Morgan dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team. A clockwise (CW) spread shows on the date, the point of the bust and every star, and some letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM are slightly doubled. LIBERTY is spread to the east and south, and the eyelid is tripled, and the lips and the inside of the nostril are doubled. The obverse has a gouge just under the wheat kernels above LI of LIBERTY on Stage A, and Stages B and C are unchanged. On Reverse Stage A the reverse is WDDR-004, the VAM-19 die pairing, with a scratch running from the left wreath through the left star to the rim. On Reverse Stage B the reverse is WDDR-001, the VAM-18 pairing, with parallel scratches through and left of the O in ONE and scratches between the olive branch leaves and the left side of the wreath. Reverse Stage C is the VAM-20 pairing. Gary Alender submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 11-O-III, and its VAM numbers are 18, 19 and 20.
