1878 Morgan Dollar - 8TF - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008

Description

1878 WDDO-008 is a doubled die obverse on the 1878 8 Tail Feathers Morgan dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team. LIBERTY is doubled counterclockwise (CCW), and the P, U, R and B of PLURIBUS show separated serifs. The first two stars on the right have minor doubling. In the date, the first 8 is slightly doubled at the top of its inner loop, and the second 8 at the bottom of its outer loop. On the obverse, a gouge runs ESE between the legs of LIBERTY's R, and over-polishing of the die has removed part of the nostril. Polish marks show in the low areas of the fold from the cap top, and east of the cotton bolls on the cap. Wexler notes no reverse markers. Richard M. Prouty submitted the variety, with photos by Frank M. Zapushek. Its VAM number is 21.
