1878 Morgan Dollar - 8TF - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

1878 WDDO-004 is a doubled die obverse on the 1878 8 Tail Feathers Morgan dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team. Stars 3 through 6 on the left show an extremely close spread toward the center. The eye and PLURIBUS's R are doubled as well, LIBERTY is spread slightly to the left, and some hair strands above the 78 and on the lower back of the head are doubled. On the obverse, under the bonnet's curl and north of the second cotton boll is a gouge. Clash marks run from the back of the head to the right of the bonnet ribbon, and another clash mark runs SW from the upper front of the neck. On the lower back of the bonnet, right of the second cotton boll, is a curving scratch. The reverse is WDDR-007. Clash marks lie between the wing feathers and the upper wreath on both the left and the right, and another runs south from the lower right of IN's N to the wing. Two short scratches sit just above the point between the eagle's talons where the branch and arrows cross. Istvan Henrik submitted the variety. Its VAM number is 14.1.
