Description

1878 WDDO-002 is a doubled die obverse on the 1878 8 Tail Feathers Morgan dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team. A counterclockwise (CCW) spread pivoting near 2:00 shows on all the stars and on E PLURIBUS UNUM, and every upper hair and bonnet detail shows some of it. LIBERTY is very strongly doubled, the stronger image lying to the right. The eyelid has four separate images: the main one, one from the CCW pivot, and two more lying south of the main eyelid that come from much earlier hubbings. Strong doubling marks the lower lip and nostril, the CCW spread doubles the front of the neck, and the date's digits show slight doubling. On the obverse, hub breaks appear at the bottom of UNUM's first U and the lower left of its N. The reverse is WDDR-002. It has a hub chip on the bottom of DOLLAR's D, the eagle's right wing is detached from the leg by over-polishing, and a die crack crosses the tops of the USA letters, the right star, and the bottom of LLAR in DOLLAR. Gary Wagnon submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 18-O-III, and its VAM number is 38.
