2000P(SAC)-100DER-003T Trail Die Reverse

Description

A trail die reverse variety on the 2000 Philadelphia Mint Sacagawea Dollar, 100DER-003T was discovered by Steven Bernatowics. Die markers at Stage C place both sides in late die state: the obverse exhibits a die crack running from the bridge of Sacagawea's nose down through her lips, while the reverse shows an abraded die clash through the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. The trail die effect on the reverse, combined with the advanced late die state markers, suggests this die pair saw extensive use before the trail die characteristics were identified. Glenna Goodacre's Sacagawea Dollar was introduced in 2000 as a replacement for the Susan B. Anthony Dollar, featuring the young Shoshone woman carrying her infant son Jean Baptiste on the obverse and a soaring eagle on the reverse. The distinctive manganese brass composition — 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, and 2% nickel — gives the coin its golden color. Trail Dies attribution. The 2000 Philadelphia issue saw massive initial production as the Mint promoted the new dollar coin design.
