Description

On the reverse of this 2007 Philadelphia Mint Presidential Dollar honoring Thomas Jefferson, a single trail line extends northward from the numeral "1" in the denomination at an offset direction of 010 degrees. Trail die varieties arise during the die manufacturing process when a working die or hub shifts slightly while under partial pressure, dragging a fine linear impression across the die face — a mechanical artifact that then appears as a raised line on every coin struck from that die. The 010-degree bearing places the trail nearly vertical, running from the top of the "1" toward the upper reverse field. Presidential Dollar reverses carry the Statue of Liberty design by Don Everhart, with the denomination "$1" positioned at the lower reverse, so this trail line would extend into the open field area above the value marking. The 2007 Thomas Jefferson dollar was struck in manganese-brass clad composition (88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, 2% nickel) on planchets with a distinctive golden color. Philadelphia produced 100,800,000 Position A and 102,810,000 Position B specimens of the Jefferson dollar, and this variety's "Position A" designation refers to the edge-lettering orientation relative to the obverse. Magnification of 5x or greater directed at the "1" in the denomination is sufficient to confirm the trail line and its northward bearing.
