Description

Twelfth cataloged repunched mintmark for the inaugural 1964-D Kennedy Half Dollar, RPM-012 shows a D/D mintmark rotated counter-clockwise from its primary position. The 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar was rushed into production following President Kennedy's assassination in November 1963, debuting as a 90% silver coin that the public hoarded aggressively. Denver struck hundreds of millions of these half dollars, and hand-punching of the D mintmark onto each working die produced misalignments that variety collectors catalog as RPMs. The counter-clockwise rotation of the secondary D impression indicates the punch was twisted slightly from its initial placement before the final strike seated it. This die pair carries the RDV-002 reverse die variety, identified by the distinctive flared serif on the letter G — a reverse die marker that helps confirm the attribution independent of the mintmark doubling. The combination of a first-year-of-issue silver Kennedy Half with a documentable repunched mintmark makes this variety a notable addition to the RPM census for this widely collected series.
