1964 (D) Kennedy Half Dollar - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

1964-D WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1964-D Kennedy half dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team and by VarietyVista as DDO-001. Both list it as FS-101; Wexler writes FS-50-1964D-101 (013.4) and VarietyVista FS-101 (13.4). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties records a very strong counterclockwise (CCW) spread from a pivot near 12:00, on the hair, the rear point of the bust, the designer's initials, the date, LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. John A. Wexler submitted stages A and B and Michael Dalzell stage C. CONECA lists the die as 1-O-V. Wexler follows each side through three stages. Obverse stage A has a very light, weak scratch heading ESE from the lower right of the G in GOD. At obverse stage B that scratch has been abraded away, and new ones appear: an inverted V-shaped scratch rising from the rim between the date's 6 and 4; SW scratches from the first T of TRUST down to the 6; two slightly wavy scratches heading west from the upper left of the T in LIBERTY, the upper one bending NW to the rim; light NW/SE scratches through the upright of that same T; light north-south scratches inside the ear; and SW scratches left of the I in LIBERTY. At obverse stage C only the scratches by LIBERTY's I and T remain, and a NNE/SSW scratch appears between the U and S of TRUST. On the reverse, stage A shows a flanged G in the FG initials and a scratch heading NW from the left center of the A in DOLLAR, crossing the top of the second L and passing through the star that sits between the two Ls. At reverse stage B those markers have been abraded away; many north-south scratches fill the fields, a heavier scratch runs SW to the star from the second T of STATES, starting at its lower center, and another heavier scratch runs S by W from the base of the A's right leg in STATES, through the star and on to the ray. At reverse stage C the north-south field scratches are less defined, while the scratches from the A and the second T of STATES remain. VarietyVista, with the reporter unknown, describes a strong spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, the LI and TY of LIBERTY, the designer's initials and the hair at the back of the head. It gives the reverse its design-variety code RDV-002 (Flared G). Under its marker codes UVC-041 and DMR-003, stage A is an early die state with a light scratch running southeast from the lower G of GOD and a scratch heading northwest from the A of DOLLAR. Stage B is a middle die state with a scratch running southeast through the hair below the R of LIBERTY, a scratch from the upper left of the T in LIBERTY north to the rim with a shorter parallel one beneath it, and many scratches on the reverse. A late stage C is unconfirmed.
