About This Coin
The 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar is a United States half dollar from the Kennedy Half Dollars Silver 1964 to Date series — the only year of issue. In 1964, coins were struck at the Denver and Philadelphia Mints with a combined mintage of 597.6 million. The obverse features John F. Kennedy facing left, based on the presidential medal by Gilroy Roberts and the reverse displays the Presidential Seal — a heraldic eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows. Rushed into production weeks after President Kennedy's assassination. Both Philadelphia and Denver struck massive quantities that were immediately hoarded. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 12.5 grams, with a reeded edge. Collectors have cataloged 168 known die varieties for this date across 7 categories, including doubled die obverse, doubled die reverse, doubled working hub obverse and 4 other types. Across its variants, estimated values range from $37 to $613 depending on mint mark, grade, and strike type. A notable auction result reached $58K in MS68 grade at Heritage Auctions. Designed by Gilroy Roberts (obverse) / Frank Gasparro (reverse).
