1964 (D) Kennedy Half Dollar - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003 / DDO-003

Description

1964-D WDDO-003 is a doubled die obverse on the 1964-D Kennedy half dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team and by VarietyVista as DDO-003. Both list it as FS-103 (Wexler writes it FS-50-1964D-103 (013.5)). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties records a very strong, tripled counterclockwise (CCW) spread from a pivot near 11:00, on the hair at the head's top and back, the designer's initials, the date, IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY. On the obverse, many SW/NE die scratches lie to the left of the head's top and to the right along the whole back of the head. The reverse has a flanged G in the FG initials and is also a repunched mint mark, Wexler's WRPM-006, a D/D North (a secondary D north of the primary). John A. Wexler submitted the coin, and CONECA lists the die as 3-O-V. VarietyVista credits Neil Osina with the report. It describes a strong spread on the date, IN GOD WE TRUST and the L and TY of LIBERTY, tripled on WE TRUST and on the hair above and behind the ear. It gives the reverse its design-variety code RDV-002 (Flared G) and notes the reverse is listed as RPM-006. Under its marker codes UVC-043 and DMR-005, an early stage A is unconfirmed. Stage B, a middle die state, shows die scratches running SSW around the B of LIBERTY and a heavy die gouge heading north from the upper left of the E in STATES to the rim, with the RPM-006 reverse also in a middle die state. A late stage C is unconfirmed.
