Description
Eleventh cataloged repunched mintmark for the 1964-D Kennedy Half Dollar, RPM-011 documents a southeastward displacement of the D mintmark — noted as "D/D Southeast" — on what was the inaugural year of Gilroy Roberts and Frank Gasparro's iconic design honoring the recently assassinated President John F. Kennedy. The additional notation "RDV-002 (Flared G)" identifies the Reverse Design Variety as the second cataloged reverse with a distinctive flared letter G — a manufacturing characteristic in the reverse die that helps narrow attribution to a specific subset of 1964-D reverse dies. The 1964-D Kennedy Half Dollar was struck in enormous quantities at the Denver Mint, with over 156 million business strikes produced in the 90% silver composition that made the coin an immediate target for both collectors and silver hoarders. This massive production generated hundreds of die pairs, and the hand-punching of D mintmarks into each reverse die created abundant opportunities for positional misalignment. The southeastward direction indicates the initial punch impression sits below and to the right of the final position, a diagonal displacement that creates a characteristic shadow visible under magnification. Eleven cataloged RPMs for the 1964-D half dollar reflects both the enormous volume of dies employed and the sustained collector interest in first-year Kennedy varieties. The silver composition, historical significance, and design excellence of the 1964 Kennedy Half have made it one of the most collected individual issues in American numismatics, ensuring every variety receives thorough documentation.
