Description
Tenth in the repunched mintmark sequence for the 1964-D Kennedy Half Dollar, RPM-010 shares the D/D East displacement direction with several other RPMs on this date, yet each represents a distinct die with its own unique positional characteristics. The D/D East notation indicates the Denver mintmark was punched, then re-punched with the second impression landing slightly to the east (right) of the first, leaving a shadow or trace of the initial placement visible beside the final mintmark position. This variety pairs with Reverse Die Variety RDV-001, identified by its straight-serif G — a die diagnostic that connects RPM-010 to a specific subset of reverse dies used during the 1964-D production run. Ten documented RPMs for a single date and mint reflects the sheer scale of die production required for the first-year Kennedy Half Dollar, which saw Denver produce over 156 million pieces to satisfy unprecedented public demand. The entire mintmark application process during this era was manual: a Mint engraver positioned a steel punch bearing the letter D against the working die and struck it with a hammer, relying on skill and experience for consistent placement. Even the most experienced engraver would occasionally misposition the first punch, necessitating a corrective second blow — the very mechanism that produces repunched mintmarks. After 1989, the U.S. Mint began including mintmarks directly on the master die, eliminating hand-punching and ending the era of RPM varieties on new coinage. The 1964-D Kennedy RPMs thus document one of the final decades of this centuries-old manual process.
