Description

Shifting the directional focus from the eastward displacements seen on RPM-008 and RPM-010, the 1964-D Kennedy Half Dollar RPM-007 displays a D/D North displacement, where the initial Denver mintmark impression landed below the final position, leaving traces of the first D visible beneath the corrected placement. The northward direction means the engraver's first strike fell slightly low before being repositioned upward for the definitive impression. Like several other 1964-D Kennedy RPMs, this variety pairs with RDV-001, the "Straight G" reverse die variety. The distinction between North, South, East, and West displacement directions on the 1964-D Kennedy Half Dollar RPMs creates a collecting framework within the date: some collectors pursue examples of each directional type, building a four-point compass set from a single coin date. Seven documented RPMs for the 1964-D Kennedy confirms the extensive die preparation infrastructure required for first-year production of this emotionally significant coin. Gilroy Roberts' obverse portrait was adapted from his presidential inaugural medal design for John F. Kennedy, and the urgency of bringing the coin to production — Congress authorized the design change on December 30, 1963, barely five weeks after the assassination — may have contributed to variations in die preparation quality including mintmark placement. The RPM-007's northward displacement is less commonly documented across Kennedy Half Dollar RPMs than eastward shifts, potentially making it of particular interest to collectors who value directional diversity in their RPM collections. Attribution requires examining the mintmark area under magnification for evidence of the initial D impression below the final position.
