1964-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

Bearing a triple-punched D mintmark — D/D/D with the first repunching to the west and the second to the southeast with a counter-clockwise rotation — RPM-005 captures the manual mintmark application process that defined pre-1990 U.S. coinage. Each working die received its mintmark from a hand-held punch, and when the engraver struck multiple times to seat the letter, slight shifts between blows created overlapping impressions. This fifth cataloged RPM for the 1964-D Kennedy Half Dollar also carries the RDV-002 designation, identifying the Flared G reverse die variety where the letter G displays a distinctive flared serif. The 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar holds unique status as the only year the denomination was struck in 90% silver — a composition chosen to honor the recently assassinated President Kennedy. Denver Mint production of 1964-dated halves was enormous, with coins struck well into 1965 to meet unprecedented public demand. Collectors should examine the mintmark area under magnification for the triple-punched D with its characteristic westward and southeastward secondary impressions.
