Description
RPM-001, which Wexler numbers WRPM-001, is a D/D South repunched mintmark on the 1964-D Kennedy half dollar, with a secondary D south of the primary, and it is paired with the reverse VarietyVista calls RDV-002 (Flared G). Both catalogs give it the Cherrypickers number FS-501, written FS-50-1964D-501 by Wexler. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties follows four obverse and four reverse stages. Stage A is the first obverse, itself a doubled die that Wexler lists without a number (WDDO-???), with doubling on the hair, the TY of LIBERTY, WE TRUST and the 64 of the date; its marker is a short north-south die scratch between the tops of the R and T of LIBERTY, nearer the T. In stage B that scratch has been abraded away, and new scratches run SW from the rim right of the I in LIBERTY and SE from the tip of the bust. Stage C adds two die gouges below and left of the I in LIBERTY. Stage D is a second obverse, also an unnumbered doubled die, with light die scratches, mostly NNE/SSW, on both sides of the I in LIBERTY. On the reverse, stage A shows the flared G of the designer's initials; very short dash-like die scratches that start at the lower left of the U in UNITED, climb as far as the A in STATES at its upper left, then drop back through most of the lower parts of TES, OF and AMERICA; scratches across the tops of HALF and DOLLAR; and a die gouge along the fifth ray's left side, where it runs between the star and E PLURIBUS UNUM. In stage B the scratches at UNITED STATES OF AMERICA are weaker, those at HALF DOLLAR are gone and the gouge remains; light NE/SW scratches cover the field, one scratch leaves the final A of AMERICA at its lower right, heading SE, a V-shaped scratch sits above the H of HALF, and another runs north from the upper left point of the A in HALF and on through the star above. The stage B markers persist in stage C and are weaker in stage D. Wexler credits Jacob M. Wiesel with stage D and notes that the Bordner files do not record who submitted the other stages. CONECA lists it as RPM #1 and Crawford as CRPM-002. VarietyVista, which does not name a reporter, also records D/D South and FS-501. Under marker codes UVC-047 and DMR-009, stage A has a strong secondary mintmark in an early die state, with the obverse listed as its DDO-007, also early. Stage B has a medium secondary mintmark in a middle die state, die scratches running to a star from the talon on the eagle's right, which is the viewer's left, and the obverse in a middle state. Under UVC-054 and DMR-016, stage C has a medium secondary mintmark in a late die state, and the obverse die has been changed, the new one in an early state.
