Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team, this 1961-D Washington Silver Quarter exhibits a D/D/D Tilted (Rotated) and Tilted (Rotated) triple-punched mintmark with two distinct rotational displacements. Cross-referenced as None known; Wexler Variety ID: 1961-D 25¢ WRPM-004. Obverse die markers include die scratches SE from the I in LIBERTY and a heavy die scratch WSW from the upper left of the E in LIBERTY. Reverse markers show a die crack down the outside of the eagle's right wing and a die chip on the right wing below the U in UNITED. Designed by John Flanagan, struck at Denver in 90% silver and 10% copper at 6.25 grams and 24.3 mm, the 1961-D was produced three years before the Coinage Act of 1965 eliminated silver from circulating quarters. The reverse eagle wing crack and chip document structural fatigue in the die.
