1961-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Repunched mintmark variety on the 1961 Denver Washington Quarter, catalogued by VarietyVista as RPM-003. The 1961-D is a 90% silver coin from the final years of silver coinage. Die marker codes UVC-0997 and DMR-004 are assigned. Stage A is early die state (EDS, unconfirmed). Stage B is confirmed as early-to-middle die state (EMDS) and is identified by two concurrent markers: a die crack down the eagle's right wing at EMDS, and a light die crack across the upper hair of Washington's portrait also at EMDS. Stage C is late die state (LDS, unconfirmed). The simultaneous eagle wing and hair die cracks in Stage B are characteristic of Washington Quarter dies stressed across two distinct relief areas, a pattern seen on multiple RPM and DDO varieties from this era. The D mintmark below Washington's neck ribbon should be examined under a loupe for evidence of secondary punch displacement.
