1956-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

RPM-002 on the 1956-D Roosevelt Dime is a D/D rotated clockwise repunched mintmark variety — the second entry in the VarietyVista RPM sequence for this date and mint — catalogued under die pair UVC-289, DMR-003. The clockwise rotation means the secondary D impression is turned in a clockwise direction relative to the final mintmark placement, producing a slightly angular ghost image above or alongside the primary D. The 1956-D Roosevelt Dime was struck in 90% silver at the Denver Mint — nine years before the Mint Act of 1965 eliminated silver from circulating dimes. Roosevelt Dimes of the 1956 era were produced in large quantities for circulation, yet the granular documentation of rotational repunches on individual dies reflects the depth of research applied to this series by variety specialists. Three die stages are documented: Stage A is Early Die State, currently unconfirmed; Stage B is Middle Die State, unconfirmed; Stage C is confirmed to exist.
