1956-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista with die identifier UVC-288 and die marker reference DMR-002, the 1956-D RPM-001 documents a D/D repunched mintmark rotated clockwise on a Roosevelt Silver Dime from the Denver Mint. The clockwise rotation indicates that when the mintmark punch was applied a second time to correct its position, the punch was held at a slightly rotated angle relative to the first impression — creating a rotational offset where different portions of the secondary D show varying degrees of separation from the primary letter, a pattern distinct from simple directional shifts. Three die stages have been recorded: Stage A in early die state (EDS), unconfirmed; Stage B with the reverse in mid-die-state (MDS) and the obverse still in early die state (EDS) — an asymmetric wear pattern indicating the reverse die deteriorated faster than the obverse, possibly because the reverse struck against the anvil die position; and Stage C in late die state (LDS), unconfirmed. The RPM-001 designation as the first cataloged repunched mintmark for the 1956-D Roosevelt Dime suggests it was either the earliest discovered or the most prominent example for this date-mint combination. John R. Sinnock designed the Roosevelt Dime, first struck in 1946 to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The 1956-D was produced at the Denver Mint in 90% silver composition (90% silver, 10% copper) weighing 2.50 grams with a diameter of 17.9 mm, as part of the final decade of silver dime production before the Coinage Act of 1965 ended silver coinage. The rotational nature of this RPM provides a distinctive visual signature under magnification, with the secondary D appearing to arc away from the primary at certain points while converging at others.
